River Stories: Growing Up on the Wisconsin
Published in Paperback by Prairie Oak Press (November, 2000)
Author: Delores Chamberlain
Average review score:

ADVENTURES THAT WARM THE HEART
RIVER STORIES is a heartwarming collection of an adventurous family's life on the river; their perseverance to fulfill a dream and their tremendous endurance to make it come true while experiencing the best life has to offer...the love of family, fresh woodsy air, the peaceful stillness of the forest, wildlife, sunrises and sunsets, the marvelous joys of achievement, but most of all, sharing togetherness on the river. Though poor in material goods, the family rejoices with a richness of spirit, a wealth of love shared, devotion in their faith in God and in each other and the respect they share for each other.

RIVER STORIES was a joy to read. Dramatic, yet humorous with strong characterization throughout, especially Dace, the father who taught his family survival with grace and love. As each character is introduced, one feels a kinship to them, almost as if one is sitting on the riverbank, looking in, taking part.

I highly recommend this book for children and adults alike...to share together. There should be more of this type of literature for families to share in the market today. I am looking forward to reading more Dee Chamberlain stories.

A Wonderful Way To Travel
The Roadside History of South Dakota is an entertaining, well-written book. At first I read this book as an armchair traveler and enjoyed anecdotes that gave the flavor and essence of South Dakota. Then I drove through the state. The book brought to life the places we passed on the way, and I was able to entertain my children with stories of the people who lived there. Driving roads like I90 became a historical and cultural experience. I am looking forward to reading other books in the Roadside History series.

Route 66
Published in Paperback by Thames & Hudson (May, 2002)
Authors: Gerd Kittel, Alexander Bloom, and Freddy Langer
Average review score:

Sixty-six in Kittel color.
A super collection of color photos of America's Mother Road. I first came across Kittel's work in 1986 when I bought his 'Southwest USA' and the following year 'A New England Autumn'. As well as photographing the landscape he has an eye for capturing man-made America and as a foreigner that does not mean he searches out the ugly and the squalid. What I find so impressive about his work is the color and depth he manages to capture, you are really there looking at the scene as he saw it. The only other photographer I know of who also captures color in the same way is Stephen Shore in his 1982 book 'Uncommon Places'

Kittel's photo essay of Route 66, in eighty-three (well printed) images captures the sights he found along the way. It starts with a spread of the morning rush-hour on a corner of Jackson Boulevard and Michigan Avenue in Chicago and ends with a picture of Santa Monica Boulevard and Ocean Avenue in California, the photos in-between show motels, gas stations, shops and frequently the people who run them, road signs, landscapes and more. Actually just the sort of photos that you would expect to see in a book about Route 66 but not until now with this quality and beauty. Some of these images are quite stunning, page sixty-one shows the Munger Moss motel in Labanon, Missouri, with its huge neon sign, page sixty-four has a near dusk image of the Boots Motel in Carthage, Missouri, the neon strips creating a glow on the sidewalk, page 157 shows a street corner in Barstow, with at least ten commercial signs disappearing into the distance to the left of the photo

In five sections between the photos pages author Freddy Langer's words cover the history of the highway in one paragraph decorative blocks. I think you can read better histories elsewhere and fortunately the text pages don't take up too much space. There are several general books about Route 66 but I got one recently that I feel is an excellent complement to Gerd Kittel's book, check out 'Travelling Route 66' by Nick Freeth. The publishers had the great idea of making it small (about the size of a postcard) but with four hundred, all color pages. It is a travelogue, state by state, with maps, of what you can see and do if you drive the whole 2,250 miles of America's most famous road. So get out there and get your kicks.

Wonderful book!
A wonderful book that friends left as a gift for us. It made me think about my family and our rural roots.

Much like a "Chicken Soup for the Rural Soul". This is a MUST READ if you live in a town where the stop light is the most exciting thing that came to town in 10 years!

What happens when cheesehead farmers retire?
What happens when cheesehead farmers retire? They go nutty and start making incredible environments. The landscape of Wisconsin is festooned with all sorts of wondrous creations - some big, some small. I have personally used this book as a self tour of many of the spaces described in the book. The authors have painstakingly documented a host of art creations of energetic Wisconsonians. An amazing array of obsessive-compulsive art making awaits you. You will NOT be disappointed! This book is a RARE find. Buy it. Use it. Then go out there and make something yourself!

The pleasure is your's when you test drive this book!
Scenic Driving INDIANA, by Douglas Wissing, is an informative and enjoyable guide to the back roads and less travelled byways of the Hoosier state. Each chapter details a tour (a variety of tours are offered, with all parts of the state represented) with an overview, excellent directions, points of interest along the way, and historical commentary. This well-organized book balances general information with interesting details, including easy-to-read maps and excellent photography. I keep a copy in the glove compartment of my car, for those lazy Sunday afternoons when I'm looking for a place to explore.

Generally vacationing throughout the U.S., we have utilized other books in the "Scenic Driving" series and all are equally delightful! Highly recommended and worth every cent!!!
